The roofs we see in Poole

Poole runs from tightly packed Victorian terraces around the Old Town and Hamworthy out to large detached houses in Canford Cliffs, Lilliput and Branksome Park, then north into the 1930s and post-war semis of Parkstone, Oakdale and Broadstone. The roof you've got — and what tends to go wrong with it — depends almost entirely on which of those Pooles you live in.

Harbour-side and clifftop properties take the brunt of the wind. Southwesterlies funnelling across Poole Harbour lift and rattle tiles along exposed ridges and verges, and it's usually the mortar bedding on ridges, hips and gable verges that lets go first. Inland, in Parkstone and Broadstone, we see more of the slow stuff: perished underfelt on 1930s roofs, blocked or sagging guttering, and flat roofs over garages and rear extensions that have simply reached the end of a felt covering's life.

Poole sits on Poole Harbour, the largest natural harbour in Europe, and across BH12 to BH17 that geography shapes every roof we look at. Salt spray and maritime exposure work on coverings and metalwork faster than they do inland — most obviously out at Sandbanks and along the Branksome shoreline, but also inland in Parkstone and around Hamworthy, where the wind carries the same salt-laden air up off the water.
