If your heating bills feel higher than they should be, your roof might be part of the problem. Heat rises — and in a poorly insulated home, a large share of it can disappear straight out through the roof.
Why the roof matters so much
Warm air rises to the top of your home. If there's little or no insulation in the loft, that warmth keeps right on going — through the ceiling, into the loft, and out through the roof. You're effectively paying to heat the sky.
A poorly insulated roof can let a significant chunk of your home's heat escape — heat you've paid good money to produce.
The good news: it's a cheap fix
Loft insulation is one of the most cost-effective home improvements you can make. It's quick to install, relatively inexpensive, and starts paying you back straight away through lower heating bills and a more comfortable home.
Signs your loft insulation needs attention
- Upstairs rooms that never feel warm
- Higher heating bills year on year
- Less than around 270mm of insulation in the loft
- Old, flattened or patchy insulation
How much insulation do you need?
The current recommendation is around 270mm of loft insulation. Many older homes have far less than this — sometimes just a thin layer — so a simple top-up can make a noticeable difference.
One company, the whole picture
Because we do roofing and insulation, we can spot heat-loss problems while we're up there — and fix them properly, with the right ventilation to avoid condensation.

Good insulation needs good ventilation. Done wrong, sealing up a loft can trap moisture and cause damp. We always make sure your roof can breathe — which is exactly why we're cautious about products like spray foam.
